Day 3.
As of this writing over 26,000 tweets have been sent out supporting an 18 year old senior in high school, Gary Lukasiewicz, who is fighting cancer in hospice just a few weeks before graduation. Our community has joined forces, coming together to support Gary’s fight with the hashtag #KeepFightingGary on Twitter.
I wanted to give a few tips to help increase the power of our Tweets.
1. Instead of clicking Twitter’s “Retweet” button, we need to start what’s called organic Tweeting.
When you see a post about #KeepFightingGary that you want to Retweet, highlight the tweet, copy, and paste it as a new tweet coming from your account. In front of the tweet place the letters RT (which stands for retweet.) This will have more weight in Twitter’s algorithm and help it pick up on the trend better.
Example: Someone Tweets: you don’t need to know someone to show support #keepfightinggary
Copy it, and paste it as a new tweet formated like this: RT @growkate you don’t need to know someone to show support #keepfightinggary (be sure to give credit to the original poster)
2. Don’t post tweets like this: #keepfightinggary #keepfightinggary #keepfightinggary
Twitter will pick this up as spam and it will count negatively towards the trend, limit the hashtag use to once per tweet.
3. When tweeting another person, place a period in front of their Twitter username at the very beginning of the tweet.
Example: . @Torbahax. When communicating on Twitter, if someone’s username is first in the tweet then only your mutual followers can see the tweet. By placing a period ( “.”) in front of the tweet, you open the tweet up to all of Twitter.
Share this. Tweet this. Believe. Hope. Pray. Keep Fighting.

Gary Lukasiewicz is a senior in high school.
He’s four weeks from graduation.
He’s also fighting cancer. For the 2nd time. This time, he’s in hospice.
In an effort to put a smile on Gary’s face and show him the power of hope, prayer, and community; students and alumni from Gary’s high school came together to create #keepfightinggary.
Within 24 hours the topic was tweeted over 10,500 times reaching millions of people. As the tweets continue to pour in from celebrities, community members, and students across the world, we continue on our journey to get #keepfightinggary trending on Twitter.
To accomplish this goal we need to reach the major influencers on Twitter. The more people that reach out to them, the more likely they will help.
Here’s the plan:
We need as many people as possible to tweet the following at these top inflencers on Twitter:
Tweet: <Name> please help trend #keepfightinggary for an 18 year old boy from Scranton, Pa. He’s in hospice battling cancer for the 2nd time.
